CONDOR HIKE

The hike leads to a canyon where numerous condors meet, nest and bathe in a waterfall-eroded rockpool. A two hour drive from Samaipata, followed by a six hour hike roundtrip. Tough Hike. Total time 10 - 12 hours.

AMBORÓ NATIONAL PARK

Volcanes Area or Fern Forest
OPTION 1 – VOLCANES1 day hike
Volcanes, 40 kms from Samaipata, the circuit starts at Laguna Volcán and gives you the opportunity to see a variety of birds. After a short climb you can enjoy the amazing scenery of Serranía Volcanes. Then descending to the canyon to complete the trek, arriving in the small village of Bermejo where your transport awaits you.

OPTION 2 - TREE FERN FOREST: LAS LAURAS

You will be picked up from La Víspera at about 9am.  The 1 hour drive off road to the start of the hike takes you through an area where you will see tree cactuses and great views.  The hike lasts between 3 and 6 hours, depending on the group,  and is mainly within the forest.  You will see many beautiful giant tree ferns and other flora and fauna.  If the group is willing and the weather is favourable you can ascend to Cerro de la Mina (2400 m) for spectacular 360 degree views of the National Park.

ABRA DE LOS TOROS

VOLCANES COMMUNITY (accommodation in cabins / tents in the community)
The Volcanes Community, 40kms from Samaipata, is surrounded by amazing views of the mountains. The area supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna, though forest density makes it difficult to see large animals, many birds such as parrots, Tojos, hummingbirds and Fisher Martins are frequently seen. Guides can also identify the footprints of puma, tapir and the spectacle bear.

OPTION 2 – 2 days / 1 night
Day 1 – hike from Bermejo to the Volcanes Community with a short hike in afternoon to a viewpoint where you can view parrots, or take a hike through the community (2 hours). The Torecillas path (see below) is also an option.
Day 2 – hike along the canyon and up to Laguna Volcan, visiting Cuevas waterfalls on the way back.

OPTION 3 – 3 days / 2 nights
Day 1 – hike from Bermejo to the Volcanes Community with a short hike in afternoon to a viewpoint where you can view parrots, or take a hike through the community (2 hours). The Torecillas path (see below) is also an option.
Day 2 – Ecological circuit (see below) - 6-7 hour hike further into the Amboró National Park, with stunning views.
Day 3 – hike along the canyon and up to Laguna Volcan, visiting Cuevas waterfalls on the way back.

 

Alternative hikes (2 and 3 day hikes)

a. Ecological Circuit: 3d/2n 13 kms. Visit the Viewpoint of Volcanes, Pailones, El Curial and La Lima. Maximum effort trek with some steep paths - but with impressive panoramas. You will trek through different types of forest and have the opportunity to bathe in the natural pools.

b. Torrecillas path: 2d/1n – 3d/2n this shorter but strenuous trek takes you by the river cut gorge, after 2 hours you will reach its end and find a waterfall. The rock formations are impresive and it’s possible to admire the interesting Tojo nests.

located at 50 min. aprox. from Samaipata and starting a 2 hour treck, this area offers

de la Mina, Alto Yuruma, etc. and big chances to see Condors and eagles.
Descending another path (completing the circuit) you walk through 2 different forests

with orchids, giant ferns, strangled ficus until you get back to the starting point.

Steep paths (not for people that suffers from vértigo). Full day tour.

1: La Pajcha Waterfall: Beautiful tour through rolling landscapes alternated with
steep climbs/descents; little streams and traditional communities; visit little
farmstead village Postrervallecito and be invited for coffee with Doña
Valentina and Don Pancho.

La Pajcha is a 35 m high waterfall with a small sandy beach. The spot has a cathedral
like ambience. Observe parrot caves, various tree species, bromeliads and perhaps
be lucky to spot the urina (Andes deer) and iguana.
Duration: 5 hours en route and 2-3 hours at the waterfall.

2: Postrervalle-circuit: Tour through the valley area. Visit La Pajcha Waterfall,
traditional communities, Postrervallecito, San Juan de Rosario, Postrervalle, Tierras
Nuevas, Quirusillas and Mairana.

Start the tour on Thursday in order to visit the Sunday market in Tarabuco.

Day 1 Overnight in Vallegrande or La Higuera (Che Guevarra pilgrimage area)
· Samaipata, Trigal: enormous cacti; Vallegrande: "Vallunos" centre; Hospital, Mausoleum, Casa de la Cultura.
· (via Pucará to La Higuera, where Che Guevara was killed)

Day 2 Overnight in Villa Serrano
· (Vallegrande-Pucará), Río Grande: desert, transition to indigenous land, greenish Nuevo Mundo, charming Villa Serrano: beautiful adobe houses.

Day 3 Zudañez
· Villa Serrano, Tomina, Zudañez, indigenous farmland, fantastic landscapes, neat cobble-stoned villages, colonial haciendas en route.

Day 4 Sucre
· Tarabuco: colourful indigenous Sunday market: people dressed in handmade weavings, the most renowned in Bolivia, lighthearted atmosphere. After lunch on to Sucre.
